SPEAKERS AND MODERATOR
Kwong Chan graduated with an MD degree from KMU and obtained his PhD from Griffith University School of Psychology. He is now a Senior Lecturer of Medical Education teaching communication skills at the School of Medicine, Griffith University, Australia. He was voted one of the most valued staff member in pre-clinical year at the university.
John Corbett is Professor of English and the head of the English Department and the Language Center at the University of Macao. He has published widely on language education, corpus-based language studies, and intercultural communication.
Peih-ying Lu is Professor of English and Medical Humanities at Medical School, Kaohsiung Medical University. Her main research interests are in Cultural Competence in Medical Education, Medical Humanities and English in Medical Education.
SESSION CONTENT
Who, What, Why, When, Where, How, How Much and More: The seven key questions and some bonuses of medical communication teaching
This session explores the rational for doctor-patient communication learning and teaching by answering the questions of who, what, why, when, where, how and how much. The presenter will share his experience in conducting small group simulated communication workshops and the positive impact of the training on team work, feedback and reflective practice.
Interview, Story, Conversation, Poem - Ways of looking at medical communication
This session considers doctor-patient communication from different angles: as a means of exchanging information, as a narrative of illness, as social interaction, and as an aesthetic construct involving point-of-view, metaphor and illumination. The presenter will argue that doctor-patient communication integrates all of these angles and that English instruction in medical settings can usefully draw upon them to develop proficient, professional speakers and listeners.
